LinguaLocal

India's 22+ official languages lack structured learning resources. LinguaLocal bridges this gap with a user-friendly, culturally immersive platform for Indian language learning.

Problem Statement

India is a country of diverse languages, with over 22 official languages and hundreds of dialects. Many individuals struggle to learn local languages due to the lack of accessible resources and structured learning paths. Existing language learning platforms predominantly focus on global languages like English, Spanish, and French, leaving a gap for those interested in Indian languages. LinguaLocal aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive platform for learning local Indian languages in a user-friendly and culturally immersive way.

Solutions

LinguaLocal, a mobile app dedicated to making local Indian language learning accessible and engaging. LinguaLocal offers structured lessons tailored to each language's unique script and phonetics, along with cultural insights that enrich the learning experience. By providing a comprehensive and culturally immersive platform, LinguaLocal helps users effectively learn and connect with India’s diverse linguistic landscape without relying on user connections.

Design Process

Objective

The objective is to ensure that the app effectively meets the diverse needs of its users by providing personalised learning paths, integrating cultural context, and offering interactive features. Through thorough user research, analysis, and iterative design, the case study aims to create a seamless and engaging language learning experience that fosters both linguistic proficiency and cultural connection.

Target Audience:

  1. Students and professionals moving to different states within India for education or work.

  2. Non-native speakers who want to learn a local Indian language for travel, work, or personal interest.

  3. Native speakers who want to improve their literacy in their regional language.

  4. Language enthusiasts interested in preserving and promoting Indian languages.

User Research Insights

At the discovery phase of my project, I conducted few user interviews (around 15) to understand better the needs, behaviour and motivations of the users.

User Persona

Analysis and Design Decisions

Based on the research findings and user needs, the following key features were identified for LinguaLocal:

  2. Visual and audio aids to help users master scripts and pronunciations.

  3. Adaptive learning paths based on the user’s proficiency, goals, and learning style.

  4. A mix of flashcards, quizzes, and conversation to practice the native language.
